Ahaad Alamoudi’s residency project drew inspiration from a blend of pop culture and Greek history. In the form of a moving-image, the work produced depicts a surreal conversation between a human and a star that has glimpsed the future but can’t recall it. This work references cultural elements from Greece and Saudi Arabia, including traditional singing, the Cycladic frying pan, astrolabes, and Ahaad’s personal experiences, with for example the wildfires, during the Residency. This work is part of a larger reflection on transformation and change, weaving narratives from Greek and Arab myths. Ahaad collaborated with local professionals and added a custom Greek soundtrack to the video. The presentation of the video piece incorporates physical elements like a burnt olive tree, the frying pan, and a handmade headset to create an immersive experience that connects the audience with the message. Ahaad focused on the intriguing similarities between Saudi and Greek culture, such as the Mawwal that inspired her in previous work leading to research and work with the instrument Yayli Tanbur, building a bridge between these two worlds.

Through various creative outlets, Ahaad Alamoudi (b. 1991, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) has dedicated years to documenting the evolving social landscape of Saudi Arabia. Her work spotlights the pivotal role of gender in shaping her artistic expression. Raised in both Saudi Arabia and the UK, she now operates from Jeddah. Her art takes apart national and cultural symbols, like traditional dances and popular songs, and gives them a fresh perspective. By harnessing digital manipulation techniques to manipulate the pacing of discovered video clips and reimagining visuals, she skillfully pays homage to the dynamic Saudi youth culture of viral remixes. Through this approach, she infuses her work with additional depths of interpretation and a sense of playful creativity. Her art has graced global stages, with prominent showcases ranging from the prestigious Venice Biennale to exhibitions like Phantom Punch and Generations, which serve as vital conduits for Middle Eastern artists, enabling their work to captivate international audiences.

Ahaad Alamoudi lives and works between Jeddah and London. Past exhibitions include Art Dubai (Dubai, United Arab Emirates), ATHR Gallery (Jeddah, KSA), Abu Dhabi Art (Abu Dhabi, UAE), Bates Museum of Art (Lewiston, USA).

Deeply linked to his own personal and intimate experience and history with the surroundings, Aziz Jamal’s research during Greece Residency was rooted in the materiality of things and ideas. Aziz Jamal shapes his practice in a deeply experimental fashion, in profound link to what he lives, through found objects, ceramics, paintings, drawings and thoughts. Experimenting with what attracts him, Jamal built an assemblage of handcrafted artefacts, artworks and other found objects. Inspired by different things he had the possibility to see, for instance at the Museum of Cycladic art, such as the small prehistoric figurines and his overall experience in Athens, Jamal created a small world, a constellation of striking ingredients that constitutes a tangible result of his personal history in Greece. Between the possibility of working directly with the clay found in his garden, the various objects that inspired him to create new artefacts and the idea of animating this little universe in a movie, Jamal designed a multimedia installation with multiple underlying features and meanings. The artist created a “figurine tribe” in clay, composed of 65 sculptural pieces, that the camera follows in its quest to find its ideal home, a shelf in the Archeological Museum, thereby raising universal questions around art and archeological conservation and preservation.

Aziz Jamal (b. 1993, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) is a multidisciplinary Saudi artist. He finds inspiration in spontaneous bursts of creativity. His studio based practice leads him to explore multiple mediums and techniques, following an inner will to craft and create a tangible narrative composed by a myriad of different elements and ideas. His in-depth explorations of a singular wellspring of inspiration result in art works closely tied to the specific place and time of their conception. In this sense, his creations bear distinctive characteristics stemming from a physical, temporal, and spiritual connection to a particular moment and location.

Aziz Jamal lives and works in Saudi Arabia. Past exhibitions include Noor Riyadh (KSA), EWU Gallery (USA), Chase Gallery (USA), Bozzi Gallery (USA), Al Balad (KSA), Studio AF (KSA).

Deeply inspired by his hometown of Riyadh and the urban, rural, and historical aspects of Athens, including immediate features like highways, street lighting, and abandoned industrial sites, Kahled Makhshoush embarked on a series of illustrations during the Greece Residency. The resulting artworks aimed to depict scenes that resonated with him, blending his familiarity with Saudi Arabia and his observations in Greece. The artist’s primary goal was to establish a visual and emotional connection between the two countries. Interested in exploring environmental and visual analogies between the rural, urban and historical settings Makhshoush drew new works in an attempt to constitute a series of illustrations showing sceneries that struck him particularly between Riyadh and what he saw and observed in Greece, with an intention to highlight the urban and natural landscape both city have to offer.

Khaled Makhshoush (1992, Riyadh, KSA) is a Saudi digital artist specialising in pixel art. He crafts his art using a drawing tablet, stylus, and a mouse, aiming to create atmospheric digital paintings that delve into the intricate connection between emotions and physical space. His work centers around the sensation a place evokes, often portraying scenes inspired by real locations. This blend of reality and imagination invites viewers to partake in his creative vision. Drawing inspiration from the contemporary world and its diverse landscapes, he challenges himself to express his ideas and emotions using the limited yet potent medium of pixel art. Employing colors, shapes, and patterns, he meticulously constructs detailed scenes that capture the essence of his imagination.

Lilia Ziamou’s works allude to the female body transformed through technological interventions: physical or virtual. In her practice she successively compounds digital processes and classical techniques. For this residency, she started by exploring ancient funerary rites, their links to beliefs about the afterlife, and their multiple underlying meanings in both Greek and Saudi cultures. Grounding her research in readings and discoveries regarding the obituary traditions of entombing bodies with specific objects and artifacts, she was meant to question the place of funerary rituals in the sphere of new technologies. During her residency, Lilia created an installation of four sculptural works inspired by her research on funerary rituals. Her installation encompasses classical techniques, such as stone carving and textile art practices used in both cultures, forging a connection between Greece and Saudi Arabia. She combines these classical techniques along with digital scanning and fabrication, digital imaging, and thermoplastics. With this installation, Lilia reflects on how emerging technologies might shape post-mortem rituals in the future.

Lilia Ziamou (b. Thessaloniki, Greece) is an interdisciplinary artist from Greece and the United States, now based in New York City. Her works allude to the female body transformed through technological interventions: physical or virtual. She holds the position of professor at the City University of New York, specializing in innovation, technology, and design. Despite her extensive experience, she chose to return to the role of a student, obtaining her Master’s degree from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. This unique blend of art and technology training, combined with her dedicated research, shapes her distinctive approach. She perceives the body not as a sum of its limits but as a site for innovation. In her creations, she skillfully combines traditional techniques like stone carving, casting, and draping with digital fabrication, digital imaging, and synthetic materials, offering a canvas for numerous transformative possibilities.

Taking into consideration the environmental impact of mass tourism on the art and cultural world, Maria Mavropoulou focused on the deterioration of marble sculptures and monuments caused by the direct pollution linked to savage tourism. By combining data, statistics, 3D scanning, photo documentation, and Artificial Intelligence to highlight the unstoppable erosion of Greece’s archeological heritage, and the vicious circle that can be created between cultural heritage and over promotion. The Bi-cultural focus of Mavropoulou is linked to bringing awareness and highlighting in this sense the physical evolution and degradation of historical monuments and sculptures, that Greece has been living for years, and that Saudi Arabia now might also encounter. As we know, Saudi Arabia is entering a phase of Tourism and cultural promotion at an unprecedented pace, and comparing both countries’ strategies and what can be learned from past experiences through trial and error seems essential.

Maria Mavropoulou (b. 1989, Athens, Greece) is a visual artist using mainly photography while her work expands to new forms of photographic images, such as VR and screen-captured images, GAN, and AI-generated images. Her work and research focus on the new realities created by the connectible devices and the contradictions between the physical and the virtual spaces that we inhabit, addressing issues around technological mediation. By using the most novel technology available to her, she creates works that reflect on the new ways images are produced today. Her work explores digital identity and representation in the post-social media era, algorithmic bias, network culture, power politics between machines and humans, and the multidimensionality of our experiences in our always-online world.

Maria Mavropoulou lives and works in Athens, Greece. Past exhibitions include MAST Foundation (Bologna, It), Museum of Contemporary Art (Athens, Gr), Sharjah Art Foundation (Sharjah, UAE), Maison de la Photographie (Paris, Fr).

Through the study of Greek former and present customs, and Saudi ancestral practices, Nouf Alhimiary questioned the very essence of hope, through the folkloristic need of relying on something that seems external and nevertheless extremely human. Her focus took roots in her sociological and anthropological research around Greek and Saudi ancestral traditions and heritage, bringing together two different cultures through mutual understanding, technological transition and eagerness, and historical figures. Diving into Greek and Saudi oral histories, Alhimiary explored parallels between machine learning and folklore, investigating the concepts of intelligence, free will, and personhood, as they are continuously redefined in virtual space. The artist’s research challenged the conception of technology as a cold, rational tool, and proposes an alternative narrative—that of a reflective medium capable of introspection and self-awareness. Through this lens, Alhimiary highlights the urgency for amore human-centric approach to technology, one that incorporates qualities of care and ethical consciousness. In the epoch where technology is inextricably woven into the tapestry of human experience, “Machine Poetry” plunges into the liminal space between mysticism and machine intelligence. Rooted at the crossroads of art, technology, and folklore, Alhimiary’s work produced during the Residency explored the tensions and possibilities that lie within the contemporary technological landscape.

Nouf Alhimiary (b. 1992, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) is an artist whose art practice engages technology and cultural rituals and narratives. Her work is informed by tacit knowledge of Hejazi girlhood and the folkloristic stories and rituals that form around them. She uses the virtual, feminine and its mystical aspects as frameworks. Alhimiary is interested in delving into the human-machine relationship and its spiritual dimensions and potential by creating installations that act as liminal spaces between these dimensions.Through the mediums of photography, sculpture, VR, AR, performance, writing and video she creates installations that act as portals, bridging the ethereal and the digital, and drawing participants into a realm where esoteric traditions meld with contemporary computational methods.

Nouf Alhimiary is based in London. Past exhibitions include British Museum (London, UK), Venice Biennale (Venise, Italy), Utah- MOCA (Salt Lake City, USA), Sharjah Art Museum (Charjah, United Arab Emirates)
